Fat Sandwiches on Screen: The Most Outrageous TV and Movie Moments

Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones holding and admiring a giant Fat Sal's fat sandwich on a rocky coast

We’re proud to say that Fat Sal’s has made a name for itself in the world of classic subs and over-the-top creations . We’re known from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, and yes, all the way in Dubai too. Our iconic Fat Sandwiches have even graced the big screens, and they’re even loved by some of the actors who show up in your favorite movies.

But before the Fat Sandwich could run, other sandwiches walked. There have been plenty of moments on the screen when sandwiches were the star. The humble meal of fillings held together between two slices of bread isn’t always so low-key; at times, it has taken the spotlight. Here are some iconic sandwich movements in movies and TV shows.

Sandwiches: Stars on the screen

Spanglish

Sandwich: Bacon, egg, and cheese

In the rom-com Spanglish, Adam Sandler plays the role of a recently-become-famous chef, and he builds a deliciously messy sandwich in one scene. Although he doesn’t have a name for it, it’s essentially a mash-up between a BLT and a fried egg and cheese sandwich, featuring bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayo, a fried egg, and cheese slices, all layered onto toasted bread.

When Harry Met Sally

Sandwich: Pastrami

The iconic movie scene where actress Meg Ryan’s character, Sally, fakes an orgasm takes place in one of  the best-known, traditional delis in the country, Kat’s Delicatessen. Another patron states, “I’ll have what she’s having!” when the commotion settles down. So what exactly did Sally have on her tray? A pastrami on rye, but her way — with pickles and mustard.

The Bear

Sandwich: Chicago beef sandwiches

Classic Chicago beef sandwiches are central to The Bear. We, the viewer, not only get to see behind the scenes of the grueling effort it takes to run a restaurant, but also the painstaking process of building a killer sandwich. Think thinly sliced beef chuck, giardiniera, grilled onions, and spicy sport peppers packed onto crusty French bread.

The Breakfast Club

Sandwich: Pixy Stix and Cap’n Crunch

Each student’s lunch reveals their personality, but Ally Sheedy’s Pixy Stix and Cap’n Crunch sandwich is the most unforgettable. That said, it’s no good, featuring Cap’n Crunch cereal, Pixy Stix, and butter on white bread. It’s safe to say we won’t be featuring a Fat Ally on our menu anytime soon.

Friends

Sandwich: Ross’s Thanksgiving Sandwich

Ross’s sandwich, unfortunately named the Moist Maker, was jam-packed with Thanksgiving leftovers – and the secret ingredient was a third piece of bread in the middle that had been soaked in gravy. The sandwich get stolen and he has a total meltdown over the loss in season 5, episode 9.

Fat Sal’s makes it on TV

Diners, Drive-ins and Dives

Fat Sal’s was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives (DDD) with Guy Fieri, where our over-the-top sandwiches took center stage. The mayor of Flavortown couldn’t resist chowing down on our creative combos and was impressed by the sheer size of the Fat Sandwich.

Baller’s

Donovan Carter, actor and former collegiate athlete at UCLA football, played Vernon Littlefield on HBO’s Ballers . Carter appears as part of the main cast from Season 1 through Season 5, and is wearing a Fat Sal’s T-shirt in one of the commercials promoting the show.

Televised Ducks vs. Bruins Game

During a televised University of Oregon Ducks vs. UCLA Bruins game, Sal Capek, one of the owners of Fat Sal’s, made a memorable appearance by serving the announcers one of his signature over-the-top sandwiches right in the broadcast booth.
